Lila & Pip stands for Literacy through Language Parent-Infant/ Toddler Program. Pip also happens to be another word for seed. Lila & Pip is about using American Sign Language to plant the seeds for enriched early language and literacy opportunities.

WHO IS LILA & PIP FOR?

Lila & Pip is for families with young children. Alayna Finley, Erin Bentley, and their team provide visual language and literacy programming to several groups:

  • Parents with deaf or hard of hearing children ages 0-4

  • Deaf parents of children ages 0-4

  • Parents interested in using American Sign Language with their children ages 0-4

WHAT IS THE FOCUS?

Lila & Pip focuses on the building blocks of early language and literacy. We coach parents and offer families opportunities to practice early language skills such as:

  • Joint attention

  • Child-directed sign ("parentese")

  • Pretend play

  • Book reading and conversations about stories

  • ASL rhymes and rhythms

WHAT DO SESSIONS LOOK LIKE?

A hands-on experience is a great way for parents and caregivers (and babies and toddlers) to learn and understand a new language. We teach American Sign Language vocabulary and phrases using real objects and visual cues in the environment. We also take advantage of natural language opportunities and use themes and activities that align with your baby or toddler's developmental and language stage.  As facilitators and teachers, we are warm and creative communicators. Our goal is for each family to feel comfortable.

WHAT IS THE FORMAT?

Currently, two formats are available.

  • Studio Classes offer parent-infant/toddler sessions to parents who are new or experienced signers and their little ones.

  • Collab brings Lila & Pip to other organizations or groups. We've worked with early intervention agencies in BC like this one, and public libraries' ASL-English Bilingual Storytime here, here, and here.

We are working on bringing Lila & Pip online for families who can't come to our classes or library storytimes!
